Madeline Kenney shares title-track from “Perfect Shapes”

October 1, 2018 4:59 pm

Madeline Kenney breaks down the meaning behind the name of her new album, Perfect Shapes. Check out the exclusive interview, along with the title-track, via Billboard.

"The phrase Perfect Shapes made me think of my own experience as a woman. We’re expected to be a 'perfect shape' in the media -- there's the idea of perfection or beauty, but inherently the ability to have children, that is something objectively I would consider is perfect. [It’s] like expectation to be something perfect when we already are.”

Madeline Kenney shares third single, “Bad Idea”

September 12, 2018 11:55 am

Madeline Kenney just shared the third cut from her forthcoming record, Perfect Shapes, out October 5th. check out the stunning, yet trippy, lyric video for "Bad Idea" via Consequence of Sound.

"The track winds tightly around taut synth lines, breathing and shrinking over a deceptively buoyant bass. Leaning more towards a dream pop feel than the previous singles, 'Bad Idea' finds Kenney wading through her own subconscious to reach conclusions for which she wasn’t even aware she was searching."

Pre-orders are available on the Carpark shop. The limited LP will be pressed on coke bottle green vinyl, and will include a 12 x 12 lyric sheet, plus a digital download card. First 70 physical pre-orders will come with a unique 11x17 riso poster. You can also listen to the track across all streaming services.

“Overhead” music video

August 15, 2018 11:29 am

Madeline Kenney confronts societal pressures about motherhood in her new track, “Overhead.” Check out the haunting music video via Stereogum. This is the second single from Kenney’s forthcoming release, Perfect Shapes, out October 5th. Pre-orders available now.

Kenney on the track: “Lyrically, ‘Overhead’ is about the societal expectations of women to have children, my own grappling with those expectations, and considering the value and depth in my life without children. For the video, I wanted to express that idea through the image of an arid, lofty, haunted house — not traditionally creepy, but moreso haunted by my own personal demons. The women dancers come in to exorcise those demons out, offset the heaviness, and call attention to the fact that a lot of us are having the same internal conversations. During the video shoot, we talked a lot about this, and a few of the women agreed to share some words on what the song and video represent to them.”

Madeline Kenney signs to Carpark, announces album, shares first single

July 11, 2018 12:31 pm

It’s an honor & privilege to have Madeline Kenney in the carpark family AND to share the news of her sophomore album Perfect Shapes. NPR Music’s All Songs Considered revealed the first cut from the album, “Cut Me Off.” Watch the music video here.

“The film’s concept of shedding one’s skin to reveal something new also mirrors kenney’s own trajectory as a musician coming into focus … [Jenn Wasner] functions as a guide and kindred spirit, reshaping Kenney’s songs around repetitive, rhythmic melodies and dreamily effervescent textures.” –NPR

Pre-orders are available now on the Carpark shop. The limited LP will be pressed on coke bottle green vinyl, and will include a 12 x 12 lyric sheet, plus a digital download card. First 70 physical pre-orders will come with a unique 11×17 riso poster. You can also listen to the track across all streaming services.

The dazzling arrangements form the perfect backdrop for the complex and open-ended questions at the core of Perfect Shapes – how do you love another when it hurts to do so? What is the physical limit to which one can carry the emotions of others? How does a modern female artist reckon with the expectations demanded of her femininity? Yet for all the notes of doubt and fear that Kenney raises, she delivers each song with confidence and nuance.

Madeline Kenney shares new single featuring Naytronix (of Tune Yards)

January 25, 2018 1:30 pm

January 25th – Madeline Kenney and Nate Brenner (Naytronix, Tune-Yards) share their collaborative single “Still Learning” today on Stereogum. The track features Kenney on vocals & guitar, Brenner on synth, bass & backup vocals and Derek Barber on guitar.

“’Still Learning’ is glitchy and calming, with all the fresh reserve of a computer rebooting itself. There’s some of the stop-and-start rhythm that Brenner brings to his work with Tune-Yards, but it reminds me more of Sylvan Esso and some of the loopier tracks on Night Night At The First Landing, the minimal electronics providing ample space for Kenney’s voice to double back on itself. There’s about five different hooks rolled into this one, a gorgeous mutated guitar line holding them all down in place.”

Kenney on working with Brenner: “This track took about a year to make, not because it was particularly complex or elusive, but rather because Nate and I would do a lot more hanging out, drinking beer, and eating pizza than tracking every time we got together. If this song had a flavor it would be mushroom pizza by the slice. Featuring Derek Barber on what some may call a guitar.”

“Still Learning” is available now on the Carpark shop and across all streaming services. Listen to it everywhere you go!

Kenney also announced North American tour dates last week in support of Soccer Mommy. She will make her overseas debut this May in support of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
