Sad13 covers Carole King’s “It’s Too Late”

April 20, 2017 12:42 pm

Head over to Stereogum & hear Sad13’s cover of Carole King’s “It’s Too Late”!

The track is part of the first volume of GRLMIC, a new foundation that “aims to support and empower a diverse spectrum of young women/non-binary youth through music.” All proceeds of their covers compilation will go to Planned Parenthood and the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls.

“Sadie Dupuis uses the same sparkling synths that marked the Speedy Ortiz leader’s solo debut Slugger to pull the ’70s song into a more modern frame of reference while still retaining its charms.”

We’re extremely excited to announce that we’ll be returning once again to SXSW on Thursday, March 16th at The Main II.  This year’s showcase will be a collaboration with our two sister labels Company Records (headed by Toro Y Moi’s Chaz Bundick) and Wax Nine (headed by Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis).  The following will be performing live music for those in attendance: Sad13, the solo pop project of Speedy Oritz’s Sadie Dupuis. Palm; the angular experimental pop band from Philly; wistful dream pop from the bay area’s Madeline Kenney; Brooklyn indie pop from Emily Reo; pulverizing thrashy guitars from Chicago’s Melkbelly; and Baltimore lo-fi dream pop band, Snail Mail.  BYOE.

“Get A Yes” music video

December 6, 2016 11:29 am

Watch Sad13’s new video for “Get A Yes” via Pitchfork. Your new step-by-step guide to consent. Directed by Isabel Farrington.

Sadie Dupuis on the video: “I wanted to make a tribute to ’90s-style group dance videos, and my childhood friend Patsy Gay, who spends her days as a dance archivist, put together a sample reel of choreography using moves from Spice Girls, Aaliyah, Salt-N-Pepa, Janet Jackson, and Jordan Knight vids… plus Stephanie Tanner and Urkel. Isabel Farrington, who directed the video, styled it as a late-night TV infomercial about teaching the dos and don’ts of getting consent to dance with your partner. We filled the video with tons of our friends and shot it over a couple days at Silent Barn.”

Sad13’s “Slugger” out today!

November 11, 2016 10:34 am

“I wanted to make songs that were the opposite of ‘Genie in A Bottle’ or ‘The Boy Is Mine.’ Songs that put affirmative consent at the heart of the subject matter and emphasize friendship among women and try to deescalate the toxic jealousy and ownership that are often centered in romantic pop songs.” — Sadie Dupuis

Slugger is eleven tracks of unapologetic fun, fusing synth melodies with smooth guitar riffs. After Sadie moved to Philadelphia in early 2016, Slugger quickly began to take shape: “I wrote and played and recorded almost all of it in the two weeks I was subletting a friend’s tiny bedroom,” she says. Fittingly, directness, self-determinism, and intimacy are the bedrocks of Slugger’s overall tone. Sadie maintains her dignified wit even in less-than-ideal entanglements, as on the album’s opening track, “<2,” styled to resemble the level of affection of which a heart is capable when it’s been twisted out of shape. “I’m in less than two with you,” sings Dupuis, her crystalline voice steadfastly delicate and assured, recalling self-proprietary forebears like Liz Phair and Fiona Apple.

Sad13’s debut record Slugger is officially out today! Pick up a copy on the Carpark shopiTunes or in a record store near you. The album is also streaming now via Spotify and Apple Music. Stop by select retail stores and receive limited edition Sad13 sticker sheets with the purchase of Slugger, while supplies last.
