MADEIRA’s “Bad Humors” is out today!

September 23, 2016 5:06 pm

“Pain is unavoidable. Hurt is a hurdle of unknowable difficulty. MADEIRA’s Bad Humors is about dealing with those problems by letting go of negative thoughts and embracing the wealth of positive possibilities. After touring the world with Yumi Zouma, the group she co-founded, Kim Pflaum left the band and moved to the seaside city of Auckland, New Zealand. The transition gave her plenty to write about. Thus, Pflaum started writing songs as MADEIRA, a solo project that began years earlier. New to Auckland, she spent her time songwriting—a way to figure out the past to make sense of the future.

The record is officially out today! Pick up a copy on the Carpark shop, iTunes or in a record store near you. The album is also streaming via Spotify and Apple Music.

Greys share “Fresh Hell”

September 22, 2016 2:34 pm

More new music coming your way! Greys just premiered their track “Fresh Hell” via Bandcamp, boasting a new sound and a look at some of the bands who helped to influence it.

Singer Shehzaad Jiwani says of the track, “I wrote the lyrics for this song after hearing about Jian Ghomeshi’s acquittal, and of Rob Ford’s death. There seemed to be a baffling amount of support and sympathy for these public figures who were, for lack of a better term, total pieces of shit. Ghomeshi’s verdict only seemed to reinforce institutional sexism and rape culture, while Ford receiving sort of a hero’s funeral completely ignored all of the ways he affected my city and most of its residents by being a racist, homophobic misogynist. I imagined this Orwellian future where anyone who disagreed with the public opinion was violently assimilated, which I think matches the cyberpunk vibe of the song. Get me off this planet.”

Greys are hitting the road this fall. More info a tickets here.

“<2" music video

September 22, 2016 1:30 pm

Sad13 (aka Sadie Dupuis) shared the second single off her forthcoming debut, Slugger, today! Check out the music video for “<2” and exclusive interview via Rookie MagThe video is an homage to YouTube and Instagram make-up application tutorials.

Sadie Dupuis on identity: “Well, I think a lot of the idea of the song is about not compromising between seemingly conflicting identities that might be housed in a person. Often when people view your identities as conflicting, it’s because of incorrect assumptions about how a person’s physical identity should impact their personality. Obviously there’s a correlation between the themes of the song and the idea of creating the video, but also I just love wearing wigs. Catherine and I found a great beauty supply shop that’s underneath a train station in Philly. I should preface this by saying I’m a wig fan—I buy a lot of wigs from Japan and on Etsy, but they’re expensive. We found this cool, inexpensive place. I hadn’t spent an enormous amount of time watching YouTube makeup tutorials before, despite having a very amateur interest in cosmetics. I got really deep into the hole of watching YouTube makeup tutorials. They’re really funny, and some of them are really strange, especially the different contouring types. Some of the things in the video are just visual puns—like bagel head is [a body modification trend] where silicon is injected into someone’s forehead so that it’s shaped like a circle. Hangover makeup is another makeup trend where you have too much blush [under your eyes], but we took it literally. I asked the makeup artist Paige Campbell, who’s awesome, to make me look like absolute shit. I wanted it to look like I was up all night weeping with a bottle of wine. Some of them we did literally based on the names, but some we just actually did the makeup, like the rainbow freckles.”

The video was co-directed by Dupuis and Catherine Elicson and features cameos by fellow Philly musicians Shamir Bailey, Rachel Browne (Field Mouse), Amanda Bartley (All Dogs), Emily Shanahan (Empath).

Prince Rama go skydiving

September 20, 2016 11:30 am

Xtreme Now is a bold foray into the unventured territory of the ‘extreme sports genre.’ Initially inspired by watching go-pro videos on mute and trying to create their own scores, Prince Rama has taken it a step further and asked various unknown daredevils to submit home-made extreme sports videos documenting themselves doing ‘extreme activities’ to songs off their new album. The results vary everywhere between skydiving to free skiing to extreme hula hooping…” they said.

Head over to The 405 and watch Prince Rama merge high fashion and extreme sports in a series of new videos featuring songs from their latest release, Xtreme Now.
