“Lucien” music video

March 28, 2016 11:32 am

Young Magic just shared the music video for their newest single, “Lucien,” via The Fader. The track is taken from their forthcoming album Still Life, out May 13th. The video was directed by Johann Rashid and Young Magic

Melati Malay on the video: “I started making ‘Lucien’ in small shack by the water. I spent half a month gathering field recordings, collecting stories and writing music. There is a day called Nyepi or ‘Day of Silence’ where no one leaves the house because it’s believed bad spirits fly over the island. They burn effigies of their monsters (Ogoh Ogoh) and then everyone hides indoors for 24 hours. It’s incredible, the streets are completely empty. I’m not sure if these ghosts still follow me in New York, but making ‘Lucien’ was my way to make an effigy of my own Ogoh Ogoh, and then burn it to the ground.”

Young Magic shares video for “Valhalla (Reprise)”

March 23, 2016 11:05 am

Young Magic unveiled another look at their forthcoming album Still Life today with the track “Valhalla (Reprise).” See the world through the eyes of Vinyl Williams as he adds visuals to the music video. Check it out via The Creators Project “Watching the music video for experimental soul duo Young Magic’s ‘Valhalla (Reprise)’ feels like stepping into a turbulent psychedelic acid poster, one of those tie-dye graphics you’re supposed to look at when ingesting foreign ideas.”

“‘Valhalla (Reprise)’ was the last song recorded for Still Life during a late night session at Rioux’s studio in Bed Stuy – infinite loops circulating in a world between an ancient reality and a virtual one. For me, this album was a process of sifting through my family’s history to better understand the present, so naturally, it felt at home within the seeking, mirrored halls of Lionel’s Valhalla.” – Melati Malay (Young Magic)

Still Life is out May 13th. Pre-order your copy on the Carpark shop or iTunes.

Young Magic announces new album + shares first single

March 3, 2016 10:53 am

More big news! Young Magic has also announced the release of their new full-length record, Still Life, out May 13th, 2016. You can stream their first single, “Lucien,” via Stereogum. Pre-orders are now available on the Carpark shop and iTunes, which will include an instant download of “Lucien.”

“Still Life inhabits a gorgeous, kaleidoscopic world, as delicate and intricate, as it is expansive and immersive. It walks the line between organic and mechanic, where dusty field recordings weave between warm Moogs and Prophets, where jazz breaks bump next to broken drum machines. It’s meticulously crafted outsider pop, made by obsessives, for obsessives.”

Young Magic “Something In The Water” short film

November 5, 2015 10:29 am

A new short film for Young Magic’s “Something In The Water” premieres today via Nowness. See what they call a “spellbinding video.”

The film was shot and directed by Christine Yuan and Adi Putra, two filmmakers from Los Angeles whose recent works include collaborations with Blackbird Blackbird and Moby. Christine has also made films for DAZED Digital including “GAWDS,” a 2014 film following teen life on a Navajo Reservation in Arizona and “DIYU 地獄,” a short film exploring the concept of hell in Chinese mythology.

This summer, the filmmaking duo began work on a new short film shot in Switzer Falls, a forest beneath a mountain surrounding north Los Angeles. They teamed up with costume designer Jen Martin to create original costumes. The film stars Grace Wilcox, a 10-year-old wunderkind who enjoys acting, dancing, and meditating.

The footage was then sent to Young Magic who soundtracked the video with “Something in The Water” from their sophomore LP, Breathing Statues.

Breathing Statues is available now in the Carpark shop and iTunes.
