“I’m Blessed” music video

November 27, 2018 11:50 am

2018 has been an extremely successful/busy year for our #1 Sadie Dupuis & her band Speedy Ortiz. A third studio album, a book of poetry, 8+ months of touring, a claymation video feat. a nice looking wolf, a ringtone feat. a nice sounding hamster, and so on.

Noisey spoke with the frontdemon in an exclusive interview. Read all about it.

“…you don’t want to totally brutally reveal everything that’s going on in your mind when you do any kind of art, but now that I have some remove from it, I don’t know what the exact meaning of all of the pieces are. So I can kind of appreciate them as a reader and there are poems in there hat make me feel like, this is really sad, or, this is really lonely. But I don’t really feel like it’s me, because it’s been so much time and there are so many poems and poets that I appreciate who, you know, I read them for those things. I read them to tap into those feelings.

Loneliness is kind of a hallmark in lots of people’s art and people are drawn to that kind of art because they want to feel like they’re not the only one with that kind of feeling. You’re drawn to lonely art because you don’t want to feel that way anymore. In revisiting this stuff I could recognize those feelings and as someone who doesn’t really feel that way anymore, I still enjoyed reading that work.” — Sadie Dupuis

Adult Swim shares new single from Speedy Ortiz

October 12, 2018 11:00 am

Adult Swim shared a track from Speedy Ortiz on Wednesday, the newest addition of their Singles series. Listen to “DTMFA,” alongside their 2014 submission “Bigger Party,” on your favorite streaming service.

“‘DTMFA’ was the last song I wrote and recorded for the Sad13 album, but something about it felt yacht rock i.e. better suited for Speedy. So with some synth leads swapped for guitar lines, it was one of the first we worked on as a band for Twerp Verse, and a live staple in 2016. The Poet’s Seat is an observation tower in Western Mass, which I was visiting around the time I wrote this. I was also carrying around a tincture that was supposed to help me commune with ghosts. Basically, looking for guidance any place I could find it…We’re happy it has a home with the Adult Swim Singles Series.”
– Sadie Dupuis

Pick up a copy of Dupuis’ book of poetry, Mouthguard, on November 1st via Gramma Press.

Mouthguard’s poems are magical escapism. They’re my devotional affirmations of manic love, or they’re incantations about illness and loss and the strangeness of bodies. Sometimes they’re creepy, sometimes droll, very often woe-is-me narcissistic.” — Dupuis

Lots of Speedy Ortiz news

Lots of Speedy Ortiz news! Peep at Rolling Stone
– New cover of Liz Phair‘s “blood keeper”
**Bandcamp sales will supply venues with Shawna Potter’s (War On Women) Making Spaces Safer guidebook**
– Sadie Dupuis’ first poetry book, Mouthguard, due out this November.

In celebration of their tour with Liz Phair, Speedy Ortiz has covered the almost entirely undiscovered track, “Blood Keeper,” a Scream 2 soundtrack outtake, written by Phair. With a “Pay What You Want” option on Bandcamp, the proceeds will fund providing each venue on the tour with Shawn Potter’s (War On Women) pocket guide, “Making Spaces Safer.” As told by the band: “As far as our choice of song, here’s the first DM I ever sent to Liz Phair: “thanks much for saying hi, it means a lot!! scream tv series made me remember ‘blood keeper.’ vague plans to record it gary numan style haha.” I have kept in touch with my hero since then, and three years later, I’m so thankful we finally get to join her on tour. “Blood Keeper” is one of my favorites of hers, made all the more tantalizing because 1. it was never officially released 2. there’s, like, NO information available about it online 3. other than that it was apparently submitted for the Scream 2 soundtrack??? We tried our best to do homage to this gorgeous mystery rock song (although not so much on the Gary Numan style promise), and are psyched the money can go to Shawna’s awesome pocket guide.”

Speedy Ortiz’s “Twerp Verse” out now!

April 27, 2018 3:37 pm

Happiest of release days to our beloved Speedy Ortiz! Twerp Verse is now available on the Carpark shop, Speedy shop, & at your fave indie record store. You can also listen to the record everywhere you go on any/all streaming services. Happy Friday! Happy listening!

“Necessary brattiness” is the motto for Speedy Ortiz’s dauntless new collection of songs, Twerp Verse. The follow-up to 2015’s Foil Deer, the band’s latest indie rock missive is prompted by a tidal wave of voices, no longer silent on the hurt they’ve endured from society’s margins. But like many of these truth-tellers, songwriter, guitarist and singer Sadie Dupuis scales the careful line between what she calls being “outrageous and practical” in order to be heard at all.

“Twerp Furs” Rough Trade NYC installation

In this interactive exhibit, “Twerp Furs,” celebrating Speedy Ortiz’s newest album, Twerp Verse, the walls of the Rough Trade NYC‘s Guardian Room shipping container will be covered with bright white stuffed-animal faux fur shag. Blue raindrops will be stuck to the walls, which visitors are invited to interact with however they see fit.

The band explains, “Twerp Verse is about maintaining optimism and staying engaged in a country that regularly feels steps away from apocalypse. We loved the idea of an over-the-top faux fur installation, which takes cues from our ‘Lean In When I Suffer’ video. It’s fun, gaudy, soft and, in its own way, comforting, but it will slowly degrade with time. The room allows visitors to actively engage in shaping and changing it–kind of like our world.”

This installation is on display indefinitely.
