@ (pronounced “At”) is the project of vocalist/guitarist Victoria Rose and multi-instrumentalist Stone Filipczak. Formed while its members were living in Philadelphia and Baltimore respectively, @’s musical bond was built via text message beginning in 2020 and eventually resulted in the release of their debut LP Mind Palace Music, which came out on Carpark Records in early 2023. The album caused an immediate stir, earning attention from outlets like Pitchfork, FADER, Stereogum (who recently named @ one of the best new bands of 2023), BrooklynVegan and NPR, who described the album as “a fascinating blend of acoustic instruments, folk harmonies, electronic production and a good dose of strangeness.“
Today, @ have returned to announce a new EP, the excellently-titled Are You There God? It’s Me, @. The EP will be released on Carpark on January 12th, 2024, and to mark the announce the band are sharing a new single called “Soul Hole,” which is accompanied by a mind-bending video created by Devon Voelkel.
The band’s new EP constitutes a fascinating evolution of @’s sound, expanding their sonic palette, flirting with hyperpop, but maintaining the essential and abiding @-ness that made their debut LP such a stand out release. This is neatly captured on “Soul Hole,” the band’s most electronic-feeling and glitchy release to date, but one that is full of moments of arresting beauty.
Rose says of the song:
“The vocal loop of this song was found as a recording which I have no recollection of making. It was quantized and developed into a track about going to the “Soul Hole”, a place where worldly desires and materiality do not exist.”
Of the video Voelkel adds:
“The music video for Soul Hole tries to answer the simple question: “What is Car World?”
Car World is a community-led organization for the greater good, on a mission to rescue the Attendants – an alien species in an alternate universe. This mission is headed by William Banks, a Brooklyn comedian and the to-be savior of Car World (which is Earth World in Arm Universe). Most further questions can be answered in video, which does its best to cover the broad strokes of Car World, its mission, and its origin.
We were also lucky enough to use the power of computer graphics to create the most realistic depiction to date of William’s journey to Car World, and what it might have been like to be there.
